Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvellous deeds – Psalm 97(98):1-4.

‘The Lord is with you.’

Mary is confronted by the angel Gabriel with the message that something quite extraordinary is going to happen to her – she is to give birth to God’s son. The angel provides no explanation for this; only the reassuring words: ‘Do not be afraid.’

Mary is puzzled. She does not know what lies in store for her. She cannot understand fully the implications of Gabriel’s words. Yet her immediate response is, ‘Yes. I’ll do what you ask.’ When we are puzzled by what is happening to us in our lives – by what God is asking of us – let us allow this example of Mary to reassure us that God stands near us each day.
