The quality of humility
When I think of significant qualities of discipleship, humility comes most to mind. Ego has no place. John the Baptist knew who he was and what his purpose was even when his own disciples questioned this. ‘I am not the Messiah, but I have been sent ahead of him…’ And today’s Gospel marks this as a clear transition from the preaching of John the Baptist to that of Jesus. There is an awareness here from John, an awareness of his strengths and weaknesses. That his role was to prepare the way, be the announcer of good news and that Jesus was/is the good news. This was his mission and where he was most humble in understanding and giving his life for God’s plan.
