About Today Readings

Acts 16:1-10. Let all the earth cry out to God with joy – Psalm 99(100):1-3, 5. John 15:18-21.

The world hated me before it hated you

John’s Gospel today does not speak of joy but of the scary business of being hated by the world because Christ has withdrawn us from the world. Throughout the world Christians are indeed persecuted, but here in Australia we live in freedom and peace. However, we cannot be of the dominant secular world. We are to be in the world, but not of the world. Our strength to do this must be drawn from the one who sent us, because he knows the one who sent him. Although that knowledge decides our direction, it does not necessarily make it easier. Many decisions made by our leaders come from a culture of death, but we are drawn into the culture of life and light. Being a light in the world is how we can be Christ-like.
