The temple of God is sacred, and you are that temple

In Paul’s letter to the Corinthians he is reminding them how important the foundations are for a building, using this as a metaphor for the community of Christ. He reminds his listeners that this is not just any building but the Temple of God, the inner sanctuary. Paul himself has been the architect of this new faith community, having spent 18 months in this thriving port city before. Through perseverance and grace he has brought the light of the Good News of salvation and eternal life into the lives of these pagan Gentiles. Paul reminds them that God’s Temple is holy and that they are that temple. This means that as a community they are endowed with Christ as their foundation. They must continue to work together to build and strengthen this community and its internal ties so that their lives bear witness to the truth that has so recently turned their lives around.
