Take time to prepare for the Son of Man

Today begins the new liturgical year and Advent – the time of preparation. Often December 2024 is a month of frenetic activity with Christmas parties, presents to buy, decorating and extra cleaning in anticipation of guests. And always with one eye on the prize of Boxing Day and the restful time to come after Christmas. Preparation in terms of Advent, however, is entirely different. It means spending time with your faith. Today’s Gospel is explicit about the need to put aside secular concerns for the day of liberation ‘will be sprung on you suddenly, like a trap’. ‘Stay awake, praying at all times for the strength to survive all that is going to happen, and to stand with confidence before the Son of Man.’
