About Today Readings

Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God. Numbers 6:22-27. May God bless us in his mercy – Psalm 66(67):2-3, 5-6, 8. Galatians 4:4-7. Luke 2:16-21.

They gave him the name Jesus

The Solemnity of Mary is often overshadowed by the Annunciation, the Assumption, and probably Christmas too. However, it should be celebrated because it is the feast celebrating Mary being Jesus’ mother. It coincides with Jesus’ circumcision, a time when Mary was likely stressed and working hard to comfort baby Jesus when he was in pain. While this intimate act might seem a strange thing to celebrate today, in Jewish Law circumcision happens at a ceremony where a child is also given their name, and Jesus’ name was special. In Luke’s account Mary was told by an angel to call her child Jesus, while in Matthew’s account an angel gives the name to Joseph in a dream. It’s a good day for us to let mum have a rest. In my opinion, all fathers should ring in the new year by getting out the barbecue, all the salads should be bought and the kids get to do the cleaning up. While celebrating, take a moment to consider that our heavenly Father loves us as he loved the early Israelites and to be grateful for the peace in the world, while also begging God that more people have the chance to experience peace in whatever form they need.
