22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time
Deuteronomy 4:1-2, 6-8. The just will live in the presence of the Lord – Psalm 14(15):2-5. James 1:17-18, 21-22, 27. Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23.
All these evil things come from within
Rightly or not, the activities of many of today’s protestors are considered performative. That is, a social media ‘like’ or post is more of a signal to your ‘tribe’ than a good faith effort to work for change.
The Pharisees were quite happy with their tribe. While they set the rules and regulations for belonging, in reality the rules were exclusionary. To paraphrase political talking points, it was a matter of ‘we say who can join us, and when’.
Jesus though didn’t come for just a few, he came for all. He wasn’t interested in lip-service and outward adherence to human regulations but called for change from within. It is not a matter of what you say but what you do that marks you as a follower of Christ.
