The Eucharist – a source of healing for our world

For many of us, our fondest (and sometimes most painful) memories involve shared meals with loved ones. The Last Supper, so carefully prepared, is marked with sadness from the start. We sense Jesus’ heightened emotions – his words reflect a deep love for and kinship with the apostles. Passover, involving the sacrifice of a year-old lamb, is already a festival of remembering the Jewish experience of being ‘passed over’ (saved) long ago in Egypt. Jesus is marking the meal differently, for he is the ‘new lamb’ and this is a ‘new covenant’. For Luke’s audience, this Passover supper is already one of memory as they break bread and drink wine together, remembering Christ with them and Christ who is to come. Two thousand years later, the sacrament of Eucharist is still celebrated in small and large communities all over the world, and the words of remembrance spoken. May Eucharist and all meals shared in fellowship continue to be a simple source of healing for our world.
