About Today Readings

19th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Wisdom 18:6-9. Happy the people the Lord has chosen to be his own – Ps 32(33):1, 12, 18-20, 22. Hebrews 11:1-2, 8-19. Luke 12:32-48.

We are called to help those who cannot help themselves

There is much to unpack in today’s Reading from Lukes’ Gospel. Verse 34, ‘For where your treasure is, there will your heart be’, also resonates profoundly when we think about what gives our lives meaning and how we live out that meaning with what we do in the world.

Our treasure may well be the gifts we share with joy and abundance, the loves we have of people, places, ideas, art, literature or music and, most especially, our faith. In verse 40, we are reminded that the Lord will come at the unexpected hour chivvying us on to be watchful and patient and true. Finally, verse 48, ‘Everyone to whom much is given, of him much will be required’, reminds us of Catholic Social Teaching. Our privilege demands that we help those who cannot help themselves.
