Sixth Sunday of Easter
Acts 8:5-8, 14-17. Let all the earth cry out to God with joy – Ps 65(66):1-7, 16, 20. 1 Peter 3:15-18. John 14:15-21.
Anointed with chrism
Pentecost is near. We remember the promise of the Lord to pour out his Spirit upon us. In the second reading today, Peter challenges us to give a reason for the hope that is in us. The Holy Spirit is the source of that hope. In confirmation we were anointed with chrism. The prayer of consecration of the chrism demands that those who are touched by this oil be made ‘temples of your glory, radiant with the goodness of life that has its source in you’. Dorothy Day was one touched by that oil. She fought long and hard for the poor and homeless in New York. Her love of God came from knowing him in the breaking of bread, and in knowing him in the poor with whom she also broke bread. In feeding them she gave a reason to New York for the hope that was in her.
