‘You may have life through his name’
What is the life that Jesus offers us? Does it begin after our death or is it an ‘added extra’ to the life we are already living? St John seems to think the latter, as he speaks of an ‘eternal life’ that enhances our biological lives, and does not end after we die. Several elements of this life are mentioned in this Gospel. First, life in Christ is filled with joy and peace. ‘Peace be with you,’ Jesus says again and again. Second, life in Christ means a call, a commission to share the good news wherever we go. Third, life in Christ is filled with the Holy Spirit. This is John’s Pentecost moment. The Spirit enables us to have the confidence and discernment to do good in the world. Can we glimpse evidence of eternal life in those around us? And what about ourselves?Email this Print This Page
