About Today Readings

Body and Blood of Christ

Deuteronomy 8:2-3, 14-16. Praise the Lord, Jerusalem – Psalm 147:12-15, 19-20. 1 Corinthians 10:16-17. John 6:51-58.

My flesh is real food and my blood is real drink

We truly become what we consume, physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. So, do we stop to read the fine print about the ingredients, or do we blindly hope for the best and gulp down the next fast-food snack or TV series? The secret of marketing is tapping into a perceived, rather than a real, need. Jesus makes it as clear as possible to his disciples about why they need the Eucharist, both its current and eternal benefits. Perhaps those listening were sceptical, after all, these sorts of claims where beyond belief and probably seemed too good to be true. As with all emerging ideas, we see the full range of people in the Gospel, from the innovators, to early adopters, to the late majority and eventually the laggards. The Eucharist continues to be difficult to digest and perhaps it’s because we try to single it out from the wholeness of Christian life. How willing are you to be offered, blessed, broken and shared to those around you?
