The Spirit at work
On this day in 1962, Vatican II commenced. This was known as the aggiornamento, an updating of the Church to engage with the modern world while maintaining its traditional roots. Pope John XXIII wanted to throw open the windows of the Church and let a renewed breath of the Spirit into it, to dynamise and galvanise it in response to the signs of the times. The Church may be monolithic, but it is not moribund.
In our parishes, we see the Spirit at work in many ways as our communities endeavour to live out the Good News and bring it into the lives of others through words and actions. We remain a holy, Catholic and apostolic Church today, engaging with the world as we find it, offering hope in the here and now, and in the life to come.
