2nd Sunday of Easter
Acts 2:42-47. Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, his love is everlasting – Ps 117(118):2-4, 13-15, 22-24. 1 Peter 1:3-9. John 20:19-31.
Fellowship, joy and wonder
The reading from Acts today reminds us of the wild enthusiasm and expectation of the early disciples of the risen Christ. They sell their goods; they share their money, their food and any other resources they possess. They attend the Temple and they celebrate the Eucharist in their homes. They live in a state of fellowship, joy and wonder.
Peter’s letter adds a new dimension: Christian joy can exist even in the midst of trials, and Peter and the early Christians knew trials well. Perhaps Peter also alludes to the story in today’s Gospel when he praises his readers for having faith in spite of not having seen Jesus.
In the Gospel, Thomas sensibly questions his fellow apostles about their seemingly absurd story of Jesus having appeared to them, until Jesus reveals himself and says, ‘Blessed are those who have not seen yet believe’.
Lord, keep us joyful in struggle and faithful until you appear.
