‘If your virtue goes no deeper than that of the Scribes and Pharisees …’

When I entered religious life in the 1960s, the emphasis was on keeping the Rule. I remember wondering if we still had to keep the Commandments! Before the teachings of Vatican II started to take hold, it was a legalistic way of life.

Jesus kept telling people that it was the heart that mattered. Appearances were unimportant. Pious observances were only of value if they were genuine expressions of love. Relationships had to be real, with people aware of the motives behind their words and actions. Jesus asks for honesty and directness in our interactions. All aspects of life had to ring true: there was no point in claiming devotion to God if your human relationships were in tatters.

Jesus, help me to remain at peace and able to discern the truth of my words and actions.
