About Today Readings

19th Sunday in Ordinary Time

1 Kings 19:9, 11-13. Lord, show us your mercy and love, and grant us your salvation – Psalm 84(85):9-14. Romans 9:1-5. Matthew 14:22-33.

Pay attention and notice the present

And after the fire came a gentle whisper. We expect God in the big dramatic moments, preferably with neon lights signposting what is happening. But it is in the small moments where God most often speaks to us. Those moments that we almost miss because they don’t appear as we might expect them to, or because we’re too distracted or busy. There has been much said about mindfulness in recent times, and it seems like almost everyone is encouraging us to pay attention and take notice of what is happening in our body and around us, and engaging with the present moment. So much so that it can feel like mindfulness is being rammed down our throats allegedly for our own good. But there remains wisdom in the approach of paying attention and noticing the present moment. And as we become more aware and mindful, we create space for God’s voice to be heard.
