About Today Readings

Isaiah 61:1-2, 10-11. My soul rejoices in my God—Luke 1:46-50, 53-54. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-24. John 1:6-8, 19-28.

The spirit of the Lord is upon me; he sent me to bring the good news to the poor.

These words, chosen from Isaiah for the Gospel acclamation for today, form part of a joyous poem. The prophet rejoices that God’s Spirit is with him, empowering him to bring good news to the poor. His words echo through the history of Israel, climax in the preaching of John the Baptist and prefigure the birth of Jesus, the most joyous event in the history of salvation, the event we will celebrate two weeks from today.

Not surprisingly, today is spoken of as Rejoicing Sunday. One way of entering into the spirit of this day is to personalise a later verse of the same poem, ‘My whole being shall rejoice in my God; for he has clothed me with the garment of salvation.’
