Love without counting the cost
The scripture challenges us to love not just in our words but also in action. The Good Samaritan’s mercy comes at a cost – it takes his time, his safety, his resources. He risks stopping on a dangerous road, tends to a stranger’s wounds with his own oil and wine, lifts him onto his animal, and pays for his care. Love always costs something: our comfort, our convenience, our sense of control. The Samaritan, an outsider, chooses costly compassion. Pope Francis reminds us that ‘Christian love is loving without counting the cost. This is the lesson of the Good Samaritan; this is the lesson of Jesus.’ His love is not cautious or calculated; it is generous and inconvenient. Who are we willing to stop for? What are we willing to give? True discipleship means more than feeling sympathy, it requires action that comes with a cost.
