About Today Readings

Week III Psalter. Ascension of The Lord.

Acts 1:1-11. Psalm 46(47):2-3, 6-9. Ephesians 4:1-13/Ephesians 1:17-23. Mark 16:15-20.

God mounts his throne to shouts of joy: a blare of trumpets for the Lord—Psalm 46(47):2-3, 6-9.

Go into all the world and proclaim the good news.

Mark’s account of the Ascension is very matter of fact: Jesus was taken up to heaven and sat at the right hand of God. His focus is on the commissioning and mission of the post-Resurrection church. For the disciples and us, Jesus continues to be present in the work of proclaiming the gospel. As Mark tells us, Jesus worked with the disciples, confirming their message with accompanying signs.

The Ascension of the Lord is not about looking up into the sky searching for God, but rather about attending to the ways the risen Christ remains at work in our lives here on earth.
