20th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Choosing to live for God

Today’s Gospel, we hear a different message from Jesus. His words are about making a choice – deciding who to follow. This reading reminds us that Jesus’ greatest desire is for us to choose him. My allegiance must be to Jesus before my family, friends, job, or country. I can’t let anything come between him and myself. He has to be first in my life. I can’t be afraid to be different than my family and friends. I can’t fall to peer pressure or live for the affirmation and applause of the world. It might be difficult, but the choice is simple. I must choose to live for God.

Lord, please help me remember you must always be first in my life. Please help me not be afraid to go against the crowd and follow you. Let me never put anyone or anything before you.
