‘Go and do likewise.’

In today’s gospel reading God’s call to care for the needy is presented in a striking way. Jesus told this parable because ‘a scholar of the law’ asked him ‘Who is my neighbour?’ (Luke 10:25.29). By telling a story about a Samaritan who did the compassionate thing when other experts in the law didn’t, Jesus made it clear that it doesn’t take years of study to know how to love God and love our neighbour. It just takes courage and humility to respond generously to the person before our eyes.

Jesus tells us ‘Go and do likewise.’ It’s that simple. It’s that clear. So let’s go and do likewise. Listen to that inner urge to reach out and help when we know we could offer assistance.

Jesus, teach me to love my neighbour as you love me – immediately, generously and extravagantly. Send me out as an ambassador of your mercy.
