Exaltation of the Cross

For God so loved the world . . .
Today’s Gospel offers one of the greatest statements about our loving God: ‘For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son.’ But the fullness of the reading offers the key point, ‘whoever believes in him may have eternal life’. So, the question to consider today is what do you require of God to truly believe? What does he have to do to give you enough evidence that what is promised is true? Is belief and faith alone enough or do you need more? Do you need to feel God’s presence?
The challenge of life is there are times, sometimes lengthy, when the presence of God or evidence of his work is absent. How then do we proceed? Maybe what is revealed in the reading is a question: what sacrifice or evidence does God need to offer for us to love him?
