About Today Readings

2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

Isaiah 49:3, 5-6. Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will – Psalm 39(40):2, 4, 7-10. 1 Corinthians 1:1-3. John 1:29-34.

God’s light

Today’s readings charge us with important life-giving and lifelong tasks. We are to do the will of God, to sing his praises, and to proclaim God’s justice. Most of all, the psalm urges us to give of ourselves – to spend time listening and being with people. ‘You do not ask for sacrifice and offerings, but an open ear’. We live in a society and a time when money is important. Without it, we could not provide tangible help to those without shelter, food or medicine, but we are reminded that this only assuages part of people’s needs. People also need to know they are heard, seen and valued. Our role is to ensure the light of God reaches the darkest corners.
