About Today Readings

2nd Sunday of Easter

Acts 2:42-47. Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, his love is everlasting – Psalm 117(118):2-4, 13-15, 22-24. 1 Peter 1:3-9. John 20:19-31.

Christ Jesus, I trust in you

Since 2000, the second Sunday of Easter has also been known as Divine Mercy Sunday.

The readings today help us to focus on the path of mercy and trust. In 1937, Faustina Kowalska, a Polish nun, reported visions and visitations from Jesus and conversations with him. He asked her to paint the vision of his merciful divinity being poured from his Sacred Heart, to remind people to take refuge in him. The devotion was actively promoted by Pope John Paul II, and Divine Mercy Sunday has been celebrated since her Canonisation on 30 April 2023 2000. In the visions, Jesus said to Faustina ‘humanity will never find peace until it turns with trust to Divine Mercy’. Like the faith of Thomas, let us make our prayer of trusting abandonment and say with firm hope: Christ Jesus, I trust in you.
