Speak, Lord, your servant is listening
How do we work out when God is calling us? Is it the wisdom of those around us, acting as intermediaries as Eli did for Samuel – understanding that it was the Lord who was calling to him and telling him how to pay attention? Is it recognising Jesus straight away as the ‘lamb of God’, the ‘Messiah’ and moving quickly to follow him as John, Andrew and Simon Peter did? For me it has often been the wisdom of others who have shown me the way to Jesus – how to be inclusive, just, compassionate and unconditionally loving. In those moments of joy and justice, service and love I have understood the call of God, sometimes challenging, sometimes easy. Many have learned to recognise the Holy Spirit, how can we show, teach others to do the same?
