About Today Readings

25th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Amos 8:4-7. Praise the Lord who lifts up the poor – Psalm 112(113):1-2, 4-8. 1 Timothy 2:1-8. Luke 16:1-13.

The Lord will not forget our actions

‘Hear this, you that trample on the needy, and bring to ruin the poor of the land.’ This warning in the book of Amos is ever relevant, as we continue to exploit and cheat the poor today. From wider societal practices that endorse or enable exploitation and unfair labour conditions, to more individual practices that build wealth at the expense of others. Amos saw how far the people had departed from God’s justice to their own greedy desires for their own benefit. Amos tells us that the Lord will not forget our actions which result in the oppression of the poor and those in need. How easy it can be to forget these harsh words as we attempt to build a financially stable future for ourselves and those whom we love. But let us not in that striving trample over others. Let us not choose superannuation funds that invest unethically, let us not purchase electronics and clothes made by slave labour, and let us remember the poor in the financial choices we make.
