About Today Readings

Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Isaiah 62:1-5. Proclaim his marvellous deeds to all the nations – Psalm 95(96):1-3, 7-10. 1 Corinthians 12:4-11. John 2:1-11.

God works in all people

Much is made of unity in diversity, as if it were something new. It is a creative tension Christians can forget or mishandle, but here it is in St Paul’s Letter to the Corinthians. There’s a sense of variety, of possibility. St Paul is quick to remind us that it is the same God who works in all people. This is the basis of our unity as persons.

The gifts received from the Holy Spirit are to be for service. It is Jesus himself who offers the model of this service. His very coming is a service and, in today’s Gospel with the help of his mother, he recognises that this service is to be amidst the joys and sorrows of everyday life. Jesus’ service in his Passion will change our lives utterly, and the service of his Incarnation will change the little things too.
