The happiness of perseverance and self-control
In one of his many books, the social researcher Hugh Mackay tried to identify the source of happiness. He came to an unexpected conclusion – he said it was self-control. The more you think about it, the more that makes sense. Without self-control, you could never persevere in a job, a course of study or even a relationship. Happiness doesn’t cause itself. Our decisions, belonging and commitment open the door to it.
Today’s readings are about commitment and perseverance. We meet Moses, standing with his arms raised. He does this for so long that Aaron and Hur need to help him. The letter to Timothy urges us to ‘keep to what you have been taught and know to be true’. Finally, Jesus tells a story about a woman who pesters a judge night and day until he gives her justice. Our faith is not a destination we have ever reached. It is the sometimes arduous task of walking each day in hope.
