18th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Isaiah 55:1-3. The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs – Ps 144(145):8-9, 15-18. Romans 8:35, 37-39. Matthew 14:13-21.
God sees possibility
‘[Jesus] said to them, “There is no need for them to go away; give them some food yourselves.” But they said to him, “Five loaves and two fish are all we have here”.’ (Matthew 14:16-17)
The crowds gathered around Jesus. It was time to leave, but where were they to go, and with no food? So, Jesus commanded his apostles to feed them. They really thought there was not enough, because they were looking with the eyes of man. They saw scarcity. Jesus saw with the eyes of God. He saw possibility. There was more than enough – 12 wicker baskets of leftovers. When I think there is not enough, or I am not enough, I can remember ‘five loaves and two fishes’. In the past, there has not been enough, and God supplied – and with abundance. If I follow his commandments and trust, he will provide.
Lord, may I give all that I have to you, even if I think that it is not enough. Then, follow what you command and wait for a miracle.
