The test of a man is in his conversation

Speaking with others often undoes us. No matter how good and pure we can seem to be when alone, when we start a conversation the cracks appear. Someone raises something negative about another and we jump on the bandwagon to gossip about them. Someone deplores the state of the world and we find so many instances to add our confirmation. Yet Jesus challenges us to produce good fruit from the store of goodness in our heart. It is not an easy ask. It might take all our lives to learn to speak wisely from our own convictions, without insulting others or withdrawing from the discussion. But this little exercise helps. When we hear about a splinter in another’s eye, we can remember the plank in our own. Try it and see. It might just improve the quality of our conversation.
