When the Lord saw her, he felt sorry for her
The English translation ‘he felt sorry for her’ doesn’t really do the Greek justice. The verb means that Jesus had a gut reaction of pity or compassion, and was moved to do something about it. We all have moments of great grief in our lives, especially when a loved one has died. Today we pray for all those who now rest in God’s care. And like Jesus, we can also respond to those who are sad or suffering. Are we moved by their pain, and do we reach out to them in compassion?
