About Today Readings

27th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Habakkuk 1:2-3; 2:2-4. If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts – Psalm 94(95):1-2, 6-9. 2 Timothy 1:6-8, 13-14. Luke 17:5-10.

Say, ‘We are merely servants’

The disciples’ request for increased faith follows some stern words from Jesus about forgiveness. ‘If your brother wrongs you seven times in one day and returns to you seven times saying, “I am sorry,” you should forgive him.’ Was this so difficult a prospect that the disciples felt the need to ask for additional reserves of faith? I can only imagine that the life of a disciple was daunting. Trying, often unsuccessfully, to decode cryptic teachings and constantly trying to grasp the notion that the mysterious, miracle-performing rabbi leading them around the countryside was likely the long-awaited Messiah. Jesus made some severe demands on the group like surrendering an earthly home, forfeiting family relationships, and making a lifelong commitment to Jesus that would likely end in a violent death. But the thing that had them asking for more faith was when Jesus asked them to forgive the same person for the same thing seven times a day. Now that was asking a lot. May our faith increase.
