4th Sunday of Advent
Isaiah 7:10-14. Let the Lord enter; he is king of glory – Ps 23(24):1-6. Romans 1:1-7. Matthew 1:18-24.
Joseph did what the angel of the Lord had told him to do
There is a level of faith here that almost defies comprehension. How many people would base a fundamental life choice on a message that came in a dream? Yet maybe it makes sense. Our dreams often reflect who we are, our hopes and fears and what has been happening in our lives. Joseph loved Mary and had chosen her as his life partner. He trusted her. The angelic messenger confirmed that trust. Her pregnancy was not due to infidelity but to a divine initiative. He and Mary had become part of an extraordinary intervention of God into human history.
A mentor once refused to see me for 10 years. Then I had a dream in which he said he had been too tough on me. If I were in the area, he would see me. Some months later, we met. There was a new depth of acceptance, trust and warmth that continued until he died.
