We are not yet perfect – just a work in progress

It is not easy to take criticism, especially if at some level we know it to be justified. At work our boss might point out some action or behaviour that hurt another or undermined the business. It takes humility to acknowledge some failure on our part. We are asked to notice in us what others have seen that we don’t want to be. Here is an invitation to repent. It is God calling us to grow into a better person. We are not yet perfect. And not only at work – sometimes our partner or community member can call us to account, too. It is worth noting in this Gospel passage that there is no report of the fishermen having repented before Jesus called them to be his disciples. Our status as companions of Jesus does not depend on our ‘goodness’. Indeed, it is as friends of Jesus that we are best moved to change our ways, to become ever more loving as he is.
