About Today Readings

12th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Jeremiah 20:10-13. Lord, in your great love, answer me – Ps 68(69):8-10, 14, 17, 33-35. Romans 5:12-15. Matthew 10:26-33.

Our sinfulness is no match for God’s love

At the Easter Vigil we hear the curious words, ‘O happy fault’, sung during the Exultet, as the Church is lit by the Pascal candle and those of the congregation. In today’s second reading we hear why Adam’s fault, the starting point of sin, might be called ‘happy’.

St Paul writes that what God does in bringing about our redemption through Jesus Christ is a gift which considerably outweighs the fall it remedies. God’s compassion, the provision of his mercy, is always so much more than our capacity to reject it. Our sinfulness is no match for his love. This is why Jesus tells the disciples in today’s Gospel, ‘Do not be afraid’. It’s not just a pep talk. Rather it is the truth that underlines all our living. That because of what God does for us through Jesus, we really have nothing – not even death itself – to fear.
