About Today Readings

5th Sunday of Lent

Jeremiah 31:31-34. Create a clean heart in me, O God – Psalm 50(51):3-4, 12-15. Hebrews 5:7-9. John 12:20-33.

I will write my Law in their hearts

God is no distant, aloof deity. He Was, He Is, and He Ever Will Be engaged with the lives of his suffering people; willing to adapt, even in his omniscience. The Lord reveals to Jeremiah that he will write a new law ‘within’ the hearts of his people – ‘not like’ the old one; and all his people will have knowledge of him intimately, ‘from the least of them to the greatest.’ God’s plan has evolved; he consistently works for his people; he is concerned for them, for us, for you. In the Letter to the Hebrews and the Gospel today, we are further reminded that God is a participative God – active, and inter-active through the power of prayer. Jesus prayed to avoid his suffering (‘Now my soul is troubled’) but he remained obedient – because he remained engaged! But the passage from Jeremiah shows us God being reactive too, creating new opportunities for humanity’s moral growth.
