About Today Readings

3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

Isaiah 8:23 – 9:3. The Lord is my light and my salvation – Psalm 26(27):1, 4, 13-14. 1 Corinthians 1:10-13, 17. Matthew 4:12-23.

A yearning for more

Today’s Gospel tells of how the first disciples began following Jesus. The account is, perhaps necessarily, brief. Jesus encounters them, says ‘come after me’, and they follow ‘at once’. There are no miracles, no thunder from the sky, no glorious choir of angels. Yet something must have happened inside the disciples for them to give up everything to follow Jesus so quickly.

This is my theory (and it’s just a theory). I think these men’s experiences and inner yearnings have led them to this moment, and Jesus (God) knows this. They’re dissatisfied with their lives, their world. They deeply desire something greater. And in this moment, they recognise what they’re yearning for in Jesus. Do you also yearn for something more? What invitation might you be waiting for?
