Body and Blood of Christ
Genesis 14:18-20. You are a priest for ever, in the line of Melchizedek – Ps 109(110):1-4. 1 Corinthians 11:23-26. Luke 9:11-17.
God entrusts himself to us
One could say our liturgical calendar is organised around commemorations of God’s self-giving. In Advent and Christmas, we celebrate God handing himself over to us in the incarnation. The God of the universe, all powerful, looked up helplessly into the eyes of his mother, unable to even raise his head. At Easter we again find Jesus giving himself into our hands. Unlike Mary’s, our hands and hearts were now hard and cruel. The creator, source of all life, looked down helplessly on his killers, unable to lift his head. Now we have this feast as a reminder that these are not events locked away in the distant past. Jesus continues to give himself over into our hands, day in and day out, in the Eucharist. Under the humble appearances of bread and wine, the God of the universe once again entrusts himself to us.
