Miracle of forgiveness

‘Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.’ Every time we turn on the TV news or open a newspaper, we are confronted by tragedy; a pregnant woman killed as she walked beside her husband and child, schoolchildren kidnapped in Nigeria, children burned to death in Ukraine, mass starvation in Sudan. There are always situations where we can ask, ‘Where were you, Lord, when this happened?’

In 2025, The Sydney Jewish Museum lost four Holocaust survivor guides. Despite all they had suffered, they radiated joy, celebrated life, and showed that evil does not triumph. Their stories: of surviving because of a malfunctioning gas chamber, of enduring five concentration camps and two death March 2026es and the losses of all their families. Their message was, ‘Do not hate’ and ‘Never let it happen again’.

In a recent article, ‘The infinity of forgiveness’, Stan Gran calls forgiveness the ultimate measurement of what it is to be human. It is absurd, unjust and a miracle, an act of grace.
