About Today Readings

Sunday of the Word of God

Nehemiah 8:2-6, 8-10. Your words, Lord, are Spirit and life – Psalm 18(19):8-10, 15. 1 Corinthians 12:12-30. Luke 1:1-4, 4:14-21.

The text is being fulfilled today even as you listen

Today, we hear the opening words of the Gospel of Luke. He begins: ‘I have decided to write an orderly sequence and an accurate account of Jesus’ life and ministry.’ And so, he does. He tells us how Jesus returned to Nazareth where he had grown up. As it was on the Sabbath, he immediately went to the Synagogue, picked up the scroll and read a passage from the prophet Isaiah. We are all familiar with his profound proclamation ending with the words – ‘Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing’. As his disciples, we too are invited to share in Jesus’ ministry no matter who we are. He has anointed us and sent us to ‘proclaim liberty to captives, give sight to the blind, free the oppressed and strive to be open to the minds and hearts of those who long to see God.’
