16th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Wisdom 12:13, 16-19. Lord, you are good and forgiving – Psalm 85(86):5-6, 9-10, 15-16. Romans 8:26-27. Matthew 13:24-43.
Let them grow together till harvest
Hortensius: I’m not rapt in your gardening, Jesus. If you leave the weeds till harvest they’ll scatter seeds everywhere. You’ll finish with a field of Salvation Jane to poison your cattle. No, get them out before they cause trouble. Same with bad eggs in the Church, I say.
Jesus: God made Paterson’s Curse, too, Hortensius, with its beautiful purple flowers. If you root the weeds out, though, you will destroy half your crop. When it comes to people, God doesn’t do the numbers. God wants each person to thrive and flower. I want my Church to live like that.
Hortensius: With respect, Jesus, that’s crazy. Strict selection, clear rules, and if you break them, you’re out, that’s the only way to run a church. Don’t wait till the bonfire at the end.
Jesus: You’re a hard man, Hortensius. The people who had me killed saw me as a weed. Would you like my Church to be like them?
