About Today Readings

21st Sunday in Ordinary Time

Isaiah 66:18-21. Go out to all the world and tell the Good News – Ps 116(117). Hebrews 12:5-7, 11-13. Luke 13:22-30.

Be the person God is asking us to be

‘Strive to enter through the narrow gate’, Jesus says in today’s Gospel Reading.

An unhealthy part of me often wonders what will happen in the afterlife to people responsible for the awful things we see in the news. Like the questioner in today’s Reading, I also wonder just how many of the ‘ordinary’ people who are neither overly good nor overly bad might find their way into God’s kingdom.

Jesus reminds us that God’s calculations as to other people’s fates are not our concern. What we should be striving for is to be the person God is asking us to be – so that we might enter the ‘narrow gate’ into the kingdom. If we begin to think that we don’t need to be too good to enter the kingdom, we risk becoming complacent. Then we’ll never find the way.
