4th Sunday of Advent

2 Samuel 7:1–5, 8–12, 14, 16. For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord – Psalm 88(89):2–5, 27, 29. Romans 16:25–27. Luke 1:26–38.

Servant of the Lord

In a modern world of instant celebrity – Idol, . . . Got Talent, Next Top Model, etc – the idea of being a servant is an anathema. Even many politicians seem to think their job is to be on TV and social media attracting attention rather than working to pass legislation. You could say ‘Public Service’ has been rebranded, where the emphasis is on being in the public and service is now in the illegible fine print. How different it was for Mary. The angel Gabriel turns her world upside down. She is doubtful, questioning and must have wondered how it was going to work, how she was going to explain the circumstances; but after these momentary qualms she answered confidently, ‘I am the servant of the Lord: may his will for me be done’. Over this Christmas period we pray for all those who will be working in the service of their communities – emergency staff, medical and fire personnel and those who continue to labour in retail. We pray also that we answer the call of the Lord with the same assured purpose as Mary.
