About Today Readings

12th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Jeremiah 20:10-13. Lord, in your great love, answer me – Psalm 68(69):8-10, 14, 17, 33-35. Romans 5:12-15. Matthew 10:26-33.

Have confidence and trust in the love of God

You have to wonder about those ‘friends’ of Jeremiah. Jeremiah’s description of their deviousness contrasts his deep trust in the Lord who is with him’like a dread warrior’. The strength that Jeremiah feels is expressed victoriously as a rejoicing song of praise for God who delivers. In Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus has been giving instruction to the twelve disciples for their mission, with plenty of cautionary advice for how to respond to what and who they encounter on their travels. This is no doubt a reflection of the kinds of hardship and suffering that the early Matthean community was experiencing. While worry seems warranted, Jesus assures his followers there’s no cause be fearful of those who would malign them. The opposite in fact: what has been whispered they should proclaim from up high, for the soul lives on, even if the body is killed. Like Jeremiah who had courage to forge on, the disciples are reminded, as we are today, to have confidence and trust that we are seen and loved by God.
