About Today Readings

30th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Exodus 22:20-26. I love you, Lord, my strength – Ps 17(18):2-4, 47, 51. 1 Thessalonians 1:5-10. Matthew 22:34-40.

Shared wisdom

The Jewish tradition is a source of so much of the wisdom of our Christian tradition. The first reading, from Exodus, spells out the Jewish teaching towards the just treatment of foreigners, of widows and children, as well as care for the poor.

Jesus’ own teaching, laid out in today’s Gospel, grows out of this tradition: ‘You shall love your neighbour as yourself.’

Let us today express our gratitude and solidarity with our Jewish neighbours, many of whom have felt particularly vulnerable in recent years. We pray for those who have suffered violence and persecution for their faith here in Australia and overseas. And as Christians, we hope we can continue to enrich each other through our shared wisdom.
