About Today Readings

1st Sunday of Advent

Isaiah 2:1-5. Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord – Psalm 121(122):1-2, 4-5, 6-9. Romans 13:11-14. Matthew 24:37-44.

Sacred time

Philosopher Charles Taylor talks about ‘sacred time’, which is different to a secular understanding of time in that it sits outside the regular calendar. In sacred time, our religious calendar takes on a metaphysical reality – such that Advent in 2022 takes us closer to the first Christmas than to January 2023. In keeping sacred time and following these religious seasons each year, we are becoming closer to a God who transcends our ordinary understanding of time and space.

We might consider this first Sunday of Advent as an entry point into this sacred time. In sacred time, we are now joined with our brethren past, present and future – and with our own selves as well – in anticipating the coming of Jesus, and the transformation it will bring to the world.
