About Today Readings

4th Sunday in Ordinary Time

St Thomas Aquinas

Deuteronomy 18:15–20. If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts – Psalm 94(95):1–2, 6–9. 1 Corinthians 7:32–35. Mark 1:21–28.

He taught them with authority

There is an appropriate synergy with today’s Gospel – the exhortation that Jesus spoke with authority marries well with today’s commemoration of St Thomas Aquinas. Aquinas spent most of his life teaching Dominican and other students in the universities his Order had founded in France and Italy. He was also given responsibility for running these institutions during his life. Aquinas was declared a Doctor of the Church in 1568 by the Dominican St Pius V, joining the four eminent Fathers of the Western Church, St Gregory the Great, St Ambrose, St Augustine and St Jerome. The authority of these great Church philosophers came from years of study, contemplation and introspection. How much greater is Jesus’ authority, which came from God.
