Belief in Christ’s light

The Matthean community would have understood through their own experience what it meant to be worthy of Christ. The fidelity of early followers of Jesus rubbed many up the wrong way: authorities and even friends and family. It’s easy to imagine conflict arising, relationships being tested and broken. It must have been a painful birth for the new community that gathered around the memory of Jesus. So many of the early Christians were persecuted and many died. This continued for decades, centuries. How did these men and women remain faithful throughout such torment? Together they somehow grew in the belief that Christ’s light would continue breaking through, even when they faced danger and hostility. Christ’s light shone for them in the welcome of strangers, in the cup of water given in kindness. And isn’t this what we believe about the presence of Christ, so many years later?
