Ss Peter & Paul
Acts 12:1-11. The Lord has set me free from all my fears – Ps 33(34):2-9. 2 Timothy 4:6-8, 17-18. Matthew 16:13-19.
How firm is the rock on which our faith is built?
Caesarea Philippi, in Northern Israel, is where one of the sources of the Jordan River flows from under a rock. This massive rock is a place of pilgrimage today, and covered in ancient niches where statuary proclaimed to which god you belonged.
Standing in that place, imagine Jesus asking, as he gestures to all the sacred shrines from different religions around them, ‘Who do they say that I am?’ Who do those around us think that he is?
But the bigger question is directed to us. Who do we think Jesus is? Peter got it right and was rewarded with the promise of being the rock upon which the Church would be built. The question shifts to our perception of the Church today. Is it the rock upon which our faith is built, or do we have some serious work to do?
