What truly matters
The Parable of the Rich Fool warns us against the emptiness of worldly wealth. In Australian society, we see this in individualism and neoliberalism, in which success is often measured by status and possessions. Yet no amount of wealth can secure what truly matters – our relationship with God and others.
As everyday Australians, we can practise true service by living simply, sharing generously, and prioritising people over profit. Volunteering, supporting those in need, and fostering community over competition reflect a life detached from greed.
For leaders in the church, humility is key. True leadership is servant leadership. This involves guiding with compassion, advocating for the vulnerable, and keeping the focus on eternal, not material, riches. When both laypeople and clergy serve with love, humility and generosity, we counter the self-centred mindset of our age and witness to a faith that values God’s kingdom above all else.
